Frequently Asked Questions
F A Q

⊗ How old should I be if I'm applying to play here?
The age limit for Exemplary is 18+.

⊗ Should I have AIM?
Indubitably.

⊗ How do PBs work here?
You decide on a character and you pick a PB for that character. This PB should: match the approximate age of your characters (thirty year olds are not eighteen year olds), and should match the race/ethnicity of your character (Latino =/ Middle Eastern, and the mods will come down on you hard if you try to pull something like that off). This PB should not be: Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, you, a Suicide Girl, or a myspace kid.

⊗ How do Xavier and Erik get their recruits?
Well, we're going to trust you, the players. Feel free to include how your characters came to be where they are in your app. If it's too outrageous or extreme we will let you know. On that note, it's your choice, of course, as to how long your character has been with Xavier or Erik.

⊗ Am I allowed to play students or teachers?
Nope! The characters in this game should all be twenty and older. Your characters can be former teachers or former students of the school, but not currently active. Only those twenty-one and older can be on the X-Men.

⊗ Can my character be a time-traveler?
Nope. At this time we will not be accepting applications with time-traveling as a power.

⊗ Are any other powers restricted?
Yes they are. We will be monitoring the number of healing powers we received very closely, along with telepaths and how they are being played.

⊗ Are NPCs allowed? If so, what kind?
NPCs are allowed with played characters, but only as they are needed. We do not expect for the number of NPCs in the game to outnumber the actual played characters. These NPCs could include people like family members, coworkers, etc. Other Marvel characters (ie, Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Dr. Strange, the Hulk, etc.) should not be NPCed by the players unless the player has cleared this with the mods.

⊗ Is character death allowed?
This will be a question answered on a case by case basis. As a whole though, we would prefer that characters were simply dropped when a player is leaving the game so that they can be played again, rather than killed. Death for plot purposes, on the other hand, might be considered if the mods are approached.

⊗ I've been a good player! Can I have a fourth character?
At this point in time, the answer is no. Three is the official character limit.

⊗ Who do I talk to if I want my character to be an X-Man? What about Brotherhood?
Please note in your hold notice which team you would like your character to be on. Also please see here for a few notes on the Brotherhood and here for a few notes on the X-Men.

⊗ Can the X-Men and the Brotherhood members have jobs aside from their affiliations?
Do they want to eat?

No, seriously, Xavier encourages those who can on his team to have lives outside of the mansion if possible (obviously those with physical or uncontrollable mutations are the exception). The Brotherhood lacks money to begin with, so anyone who can bring in a wage is encouraged.

⊗ Who is in charge of what at the mansion?
Other than Scott and Ororo being in charge of the X-Men the mansion doesn't really have anyone else in charge of anything. Everyone is expected to pull their own weight

⊗ Wait, so… what happened to the school?
The school had to move when the government realized that Xavier was training his vigilante strike force in the same building where he was teaching mutant children to control their powers. They weren't overly thrilled with that and told Xavier that he had to move one of the operations. He chose to send the school to his other home just outside Boston. That school is Salem Academy and it is run by Emma Frost and Sean Cassidy. Sean Cassidy is a playable character, while Emma is Mod Controlled.

⊗ Should I be providing my own plots?
Yes you should. This is not to say that the mods will not provide game wide plot, but we will also not be providing individualized plot for ever character.

⊗ Are there any political bodies in the US which are pro-mutant?
At this point no, there are no official political bodies which fully support mutant rights. There are supporters in both Senate and the House, and the Democratic party is over all more liberal when it comes to the handling of Mutant-Rights, but they don't have the 2/3s needed to get anything passed. The government's relationship with Charles Xavier is not support so much as tolerance because it's convenient that the X-Men are willing to deal with the things the government can't (for lack of National Guard and man power, in general) and the problem of terrorist mutants (ie, the Brotherhood).

⊗ Does Mutant Town exist?
Mutant Town does exist and it's located where Alphabet City would be on a map of Manhattan Island. Jamie Madrox lives there and runs a PI firm.

⊗ Can we play characters who aren't members of the X-Men or Brotherhood?
At the moment, no. We would like this to be a very team based game and at the moment don't want unknown radicals bouncing around for long.

⊗ Are magic-related powers allowed?
Because of some of the other concepts we are looking to introduce into the game, this will be handled and answered on a case by case basis.

⊗ Are Charles' and Erik's original powers off limits?
No! Both character's powers are available for swapping, though since they are both powerful characters we will be suitably critical of them, especially when telepathy is concerned.

⊗ How do the characters come by these journals?
The journaling system is set up through the computer network at the mansion. It connects with the campus email as well. The Brotherhood does not have the same system in place because their base is mobile and Erik does not have the know how to use anything more complicated than email, let alone set up a network. They probably all have email, though, and we mods encourage them to use those instead :D

⊗ Will this game have an ESU, NYU or both?
We hope to keep Exemplary as based in the "Real World" as you possibly can when dealing with mutants and superheroes. Any institution that exists for us now exists for the characters in game as well this means colleges and universities, So NYU does, but ESU doesn't. Xavier encouraged those who graduated from the school when it was still open to consider some form of higher education so they could contribute back to society.

⊗ When does the game officially open?
February 4th, 2008

⊗ Who is that man behind the curtain? Who are the mods?
Your mods are Kathy and Piper. Any game queries, applications, other things of interest can be directed to the game email at exemplarymods@gmail.com. You can also contact Piper on AIM at Tail Fetish.

This is just an initial list. Any other questions can be asked through comments and they will certainly be added and answered.
